Maine Media Workshop: Bodies in Motion
Discover the many ways of capturing dancers in flight
July 14 – July 20, 2013
In the week-long workshop, students will learn how to direct movement as well as how to use dancers to express their own photographic ideas. Lois encourages a new way of looking at bodies in motion and the different moods they can evoke. She goes over the creative and technical challenges of photographing movement both in the landscape and in the studio—from the creation of sculptural lighting for a moving subject to achieving crystal-sharp images.
A great photograph is not necessarily one that is preconceived; Lois demonstrates how she controls her strong compositions while allowing for improvisation, and even accidents, that result in unpredictable moments.
The schedule includes daily editing sessions of the previous day’s shoots, as well as reviews of the participants’ portfolios.
This workshop is open to all levels of photography and laptops are required for digital image editing.
Max. Enrollment: 14
Tuition: $1,095
Two-Day Photography Workshop in NYC
NEXT WORKSHOP DATES: September 28 & 29, 2013
The human form in motion is one of the most elusive yet intriguing of photographic subjects. Capturing the graceful forms of dancers in flight by slicing a moment into a fraction of a second, Lois’ photographs reveal what the human eye cannot see.
In this two-day intensive workshop, Lois will explain how she achieves her signature, crystal-sharp images and creates sculptural lighting for bodies in motion. The participants will not only practice her technique but will expand their ability to “see” the elusive moment of capture. Lois encourages the photographers to go beyond recording the dance by imagining and exploring the different emotions and narratives evoked by the human form in flight.
After demonstrating her process, the participants will photograph professional dancers at her studio in New York City using her Hasselblad camera, Leaf Aptus digital back, and Broncolor strobes which can stop the action at 1/4000 of a second. The images will appear on the monitor, providing instant feedback and easy communication with the dancers. Participants are welcome to bring their own cameras and tethering equipment as well.
The group is small and is customized to all levels of photographic experience, from beginners to professional, as the process is surprisingly easy to learn. The cost for the two days is $1550 and includes the use of the studio, four models per day, her assistants, breakfast/lunch and use of Lois’ lighting equipment.
The photographers will keep the images they shoot, but the rights to use them will be limited to personal portfolio, exhibits and web use.
We look forward to the magic that always happens when a committed group of people work and play together. If you are interested in learning more about this valuable, hands-on learning experience, please call Brianne at (212) 633-9595 or write to greenfieldstudio@loisgreenfield.com
